Fasting: No fastPolyeleosJulian: April 30

Vespers — St James

James 1.1-12

Read in context

1James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.Log in to add notes

2My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;Log in to add notes

3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.Log in to add notes

4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.Log in to add notes

5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.Log in to add notes

6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.Log in to add notes

7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.Log in to add notes

8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.Log in to add notes

9Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:Log in to add notes

10But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.Log in to add notes

11For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.Log in to add notes

12Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.Log in to add notes

Vespers — St James

James 1.13-27

Read in context

13Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:Log in to add notes

14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.Log in to add notes

15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.Log in to add notes

16Do not err, my beloved brethren.Log in to add notes

17Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.Log in to add notes

18Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.Log in to add notes

19Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:Log in to add notes

20For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.Log in to add notes

21Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.Log in to add notes

22But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.Log in to add notes

23For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:Log in to add notes

24For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.Log in to add notes

25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.Log in to add notes

26If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.Log in to add notes

27Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.Log in to add notes

Vespers — St James

James 2.1-13

Read in context

1My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.Log in to add notes

2For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;Log in to add notes

3And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:Log in to add notes

4Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?Log in to add notes

5Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?Log in to add notes

6But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?Log in to add notes

7Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?Log in to add notes

8If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:Log in to add notes

9But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.Log in to add notes

10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.Log in to add notes

11For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.Log in to add notes

12So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.Log in to add notes

13For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.Log in to add notes

Matins Gospel

John 21.15-25

Read in context

15So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.Log in to add notes

16He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.Log in to add notes

17He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.Log in to add notes

18Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.Log in to add notes

19This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.Log in to add notes

20Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?Log in to add notes

21Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Log in to add notes

22Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.Log in to add notes

23Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?Log in to add notes

24This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.Log in to add notes

25And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.Log in to add notes

Epistle

Acts 17.1-15

Read in context

1Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:Log in to add notes

2And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,Log in to add notes

3Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.Log in to add notes

4And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.Log in to add notes

5But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.Log in to add notes

6And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;Log in to add notes

7Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.Log in to add notes

8And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.Log in to add notes

9And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.Log in to add notes

10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.Log in to add notes

11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.Log in to add notes

12Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.Log in to add notes

13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.Log in to add notes

14And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.Log in to add notes

15And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.Log in to add notes

8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.Log in to add notes

11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.Log in to add notes

48If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.Log in to add notes

49And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,Log in to add notes

50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.Log in to add notes

51And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;Log in to add notes

52And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.Log in to add notes

53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.Log in to add notes

54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples.Log in to add notes

55And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves.Log in to add notes
