Epistle

1 Corinthians 14.6-19

Read in context

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?Log in to add notes

7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?Log in to add notes

8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?Log in to add notes

9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.Log in to add notes

10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.Log in to add notes

11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.Log in to add notes

12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.Log in to add notes

13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.Log in to add notes

14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.Log in to add notes

15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.Log in to add notes

16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?Log in to add notes

17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.Log in to add notes

18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:Log in to add notes

19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.Log in to add notes

Epistle — St Anna

Galatians 4.22-31

Read in context

22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.Log in to add notes

23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.Log in to add notes

24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.Log in to add notes

25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.Log in to add notes

26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.Log in to add notes

27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.Log in to add notes

28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.Log in to add notes

29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.Log in to add notes

30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.Log in to add notes

31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.Log in to add notes

Gospel

Matthew 20.17-28

Read in context

17And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,Log in to add notes

18Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,Log in to add notes

19And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.Log in to add notes

20Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.Log in to add notes

21And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.Log in to add notes

22But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.Log in to add notes

23And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.Log in to add notes

24And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.Log in to add notes

25But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.Log in to add notes

26But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;Log in to add notes

27And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:Log in to add notes

28Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.Log in to add notes

16No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.Log in to add notes

17For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.Log in to add notes

18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.Log in to add notes

19Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.Log in to add notes
